Sofie Kramer

Sofie Kramer

Sofie Kramer (1990) graduated as a director from the Maastricht Theatre Academy in 2019. Prior to that, she studied literary science at the UvA, took a series of mime classes at the ATD in Amsterdam, and studied acting at the HKU. Driven by a great love for music and visual arts, she developed a strong visual theatrical language in which musicality and physicality are central. The fighting body is a recurring theme in her work: the body fighting against time, against gravity, against the gaze of the other.

In her work, she links personal experiences to large, universal issues. She seeks out the pain points in society and is fascinated by taboos. What do we collectively repress and what are the consequences of that? What do those taboos say about us as a society? By starting from her own taboos, she creates performances that are recognizable and honest.

She allows the audience to come close and performs in an intimate manner, making societal issues tangible and carrying personal urgency. Since her graduation, she has been working on the Taboo Trilogy, a triptych of solo performances in which she explores taboos surrounding the existential themes of death, sexuality, and birth, always from a personal starting point.

The first part, You Were Never Promised a Rose Garden, was about the death of her mother. The second, A Pole Tragedy, dealt with female sexuality and the fine line between violence and eroticism. The Dead Baby Show will be the concluding piece of the trilogy and will explore taboos surrounding birth.
