Marleen Hendrickx

Marleen Hendrickx

Marleen Hendrickx (1990) is a theater maker, performer, and dancer. In 2020, she graduated from the Theater Teacher Short Program at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. As part of her graduation, she created the solo X Y I and the group performance X Y WE, about the intersex experience of herself and her performers. With her graduation, she won the AHK Final Project Audience Award and performed X Y WE at ITA during the Lieve Stad festival. From January to July 2021, Marleen was a member of team 1 of the Art & Society program at AHK, the postgraduate honors program at the Marineterrein in Amsterdam, where Marleen further developed as an artistic creator.

Marleen is convinced that theater can engage the audience in a different way than just on a rational level. Thus, theater is an important addition to other expressions and mediums surrounding societal issues.

Her performances consist of stories that she believes need to be told because she feels something must change. She places her work in a social artistic context and often involves herself as a performer. However, she also works with experts by experience on a specific theme without these individuals having (much) performance experience. Characteristic of her work is that it is visual, stylized, and in motion.

Her artistry lies not only in creating a performance but also in a broader sense. Engaging in conversations with the audience/stakeholders, giving interviews, participating in the political debate, and collaboratively organizing a performance campaign.
